The Star Formation Histories of Two Northern LMC Fields

چکیده

Ground-based UBV photometry of two fields in the northern disk of the LMC are presented. A distance modulus of (m − M)0 = 18.41± 0.04 and an extinction of AV = 0.30 ± 0.05 has been calculated for these fields. The measurable star formation history of the LMC began no more than 12 Gyr ago with a strong star forming episode with [Fe/H] = -1.63 ± 0.10 that accounted for approximately half (by mass) of the LMC’s total star formation in the first 3 Gyr. The data does not give accurate star formation rates during intermediate ages, but there appears to have been a recent increase in the star formation rate in these fields, beginning approximately 2.5 Gyr ago, with the current metallicity in the region being [Fe/H] = -0.38 ± 0.10. The two fields have had very similar star formation rates until 200 Myr ago, at which point one shows a large increase.

Star Formation Histories from HST Color-Magnitude Diagrams of Six Fields of the LMC

We present results on the analysis of background field stars found in HST WFPC2 observations of six of the old globular clusters of the Large Magellanic Cloud. Treated as contaminants by the globular cluster analysts, we produce V − I, V color-magnitude diagrams of the field stars and use them to explore the LMC’s star formation history. The photometry approaches V ∼ 26, well below the turnoff ...

The distribution of stars in three regions in the northeastern part of the Large Magellanic Cloud

B,V-CCD photometry has been obtained for stars in two fields in the NE part of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and photographic photometry, and a calibrating CCD sequence, for a third field. The colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) and luminosity functions (LFs) for main sequence (MS) and red giant (RG) stars in the fields are established. The red giant clumps (RGCs) are found to be bimodal and to...

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups

It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...

The Star Formation History of the Large Magellanic Cloud

We present the first-ever global, spatially-resolved reconstruction of the star formation history (SFH) of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), based on the application of our StarFISH analysis software to the multiband photometry of twenty million of its stars from the Magellanic Clouds Photometric Survey. The general outlines of our results are consistent with previously published results: follo...

AGB stars in the Magellanic Clouds . II . The rate of star formation across the LMC

AGB stars in the Magellanic Clouds. II. The rate of star formation across the LMC. Abstract. This article compares the distribution of Ks magnitude of Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars obtained from the DENIS and 2MASS data with theoretical distributions. These have been constructed using up-to-date stellar evolution calculations for low and intermediate-mass star...
